P. Brylski 1987 Journal 5 mi E [illegible] 1 mi S of Hwy 58 and Shell Creek Rd. Los Padres Nat'l Forest, San Luis Obispo Co., Calif Elev. 2000 ft 24 July moderately grazed by cattle, being 4-16" tall. Sherman live traps were placed in these areas. Just adjacent to the [illegible] habitat was a hillside covered of younger and sparser chanise w/ many forbs — mainly a mint in 2 m tall. 15 museum specials were set here. The third main area was a relatively recently burned over hillside of chanise. New growth has reached upwards of 1'½ m. but the charred branches of the old chanise remain. Cover here is ~ 30%. Soil is gravelly & friable. Rodent activity [illegible] is extremely high burrows everywhere. 15 Sheremans, 40 museum specials were set here. Fair amt of carnivore sign here also — mainly in badger & fox dens but various scat as well. No gopher traps were set though late in the evening we saw some fresh mounds. Gopher activity was also noted on the trap areas. These areas show good promise for good trap success. 11 pm sitting in camp listening to the screech owls & drinking wine. We lost another Dipos to heat exhaustion today; we had watered down the 3 mi jars & it was one of these that died. The Dipo's Perognathus in the Sherman traps are doing fine — showing little sign of heat stress. Moon is new. No wind. Temperature is rather low for this season — 18 °C. 30 July [illegible] check traps, 12 pm. Checked all the traps. Results were rather disappointing. 31 captures. 19 Peromyscus maniculatus, 1 P.thunei, 1 Microtus californicus (caught in
