7am pick up the traps, Sun in up & already temperatures are in high 70's - low 80's.
11am Catalogued 21 animals this morning. 3 Beechey ground squirrels were shot in this area - two as they crossed open slopes & the last shot as it climbed in oak tree near camp. 410 gauge shotgun & 4 or 6 shot used. 1♀ Sylvilagus auduboni was also shot. Linda Clark tried to collect a lagus, but missed.
Other rodents catalogued are:
3 P. maniculatus,
1 P. truei
7 Perognathus californicus (3 saved live)
we'll try again to keep the Perognathus alive in this heat. The Perognathus were caught exclusively in the Artemesia - Eriogonum scrub - although now that I remember it one was caught in a rock outcrop surrounded by open grassland. The truei were caught mainly in the Artemesia - Eriogonum scrub & the maniculatus in grass land - scrub ecotone. The auduboni Sylvilagus was shot as it sat under a juniper tree near camp. Pigger Pine (Pinus sabniana) is co-dominant w/ Quercus & Juniper interspersed sparsely.
Cattle grazing pressure on these grasslands is moderate.
