P. Brylski 1981 Journal Little Panocha Creek, 4 mi N Merced Hot Springs along County Rd. J1 Fresno [illegible] Co., Calif Elev. 550 ft vicinity. On the Perry-Warden Ranch we set 40 Sherman live traps & 70 snap traps. The habitat will be more fully described tomorrow since we were in a hurry this evening. Basically they were: flat bajada Atriplex scrub, canyon Atriplex scrub - grassland, rocky slope grassland & small canyon wash was also set w/ traps. The second location is an arroyo several miles (Mine Creek runs into L.Panocha Cr.) south of here, at Mine Creek and County Rd. 51 (here) There we set 20 Sherman & 35 snap traps in the dry creek bottom. Mine Creek cuts into the valley floor some 5-8 meters, leaving sheer loose soil faces. The creek bottom spans some 10-25 m. across, the substrate is loose sand & compacted soil - not a it easily worked by rodents. Barn owls nest there Scrubby vegetation & grasses are found in the bed on its edges. 1130 pm tonight the wind is blowing 10-20 mph from the west. No moon (new?), yet anyway. Clean night, brilliant view of the galaxy. Daytime temperatures were 90-95°F. windy. 28 July 630 am leave camp to check traps. Sunrise i round 0645 & temperature rise fairly rapidly. 2pm Traps have been picked & all a.m. we've been processing animals. From Little Panocha Creek area at this locality we captured 42 animals: 2 Perognathus californicus (1 half-eaten by ants), 3 R. nevalotis (2 discarded), 18 Peromyscus maniculatus
