P Brylsti 1987 Journal 6 mi W Panoche along County R2. J1 San Benito Co., Calif "1750' 26 July. mi clumps a uniform 2" tall. Traps were set in both lowland grassland - oak woodland and in the chaparral. I set two museum special lines of 30 traps each running up the hillside thru the chaparral - cover there was high %o, roughly 40%. Cattle trails crisscross the hillside and I don't doubt the rodents use these extensively. I also set a line of 10 traps up a narrow canyon of oak woodland habitat. The slopes on either side were steep - round 55°. Rocky grassland in the narrow (several meters wide) floor. Linda Clark set 15 Sherman live traps baited w/ barley, oats, & bird seed along a fence row in the grassland occasionally dominated by 15-m tall oaks. She set 25 Shermans in the same habitat as my museum specials. These lines are on the NE side of J1. On the SW side we set 2 lines, 2 museum specials in grassland Oak woodland ecotone. After finishing, by Then quite dark, some locals kindly asked if we needed assistance. From them we learned the McCullough Brothers are "pretty particular" and probably would take offense at our trespassing. Apparently the eldest brother is a judge in Hollister. hope we aren't found out in the morning.
