"Yucca Valley", ~ 1 1/2 mi. E. Coso Junction
(Hwy 14), Inyo Co., Calif.
May 23
630 hrs The 202-107 group et al (L. Riggs, E. Henske,
B. Braker & myself) arrived here several hours
ago. Drone hire after spending the day at Robber's
Roost -- the granitic rock prominence at
SW junction of hwy 178 x 14. Yucca Valley's a
N-S valley facing southward toward the Oven's
Valley. Joshua Trees (Yucca brevifolia) is
present in sparse #'s, but their prominence
is due to lack of any taller vegetation.
A full description of the valley & its
vegetation is given in Journal of
by same author. In partial summary,
soil is gravelly (small stones 5-20 mm on sides)
slope is 5-8° to the south. Vegetation includes
Chrysothamnus, Yucca brevifolia, Sclazaria
some Cholla cactus, some Atriplex. Numerous
but not abundant wildflowers. Ground cover
is fairly uniform -- roughly 30-40%.
Granitic deposits form the N end of the valley
which stretches perhaps 2-2 1/2 km. We
are situated 1/2 down the valley. We set
140 live Sherman traps (non-folding), baited
w/ p. butter & oats-barley mix. About
6 lines were set by different individuals
more or less at will. Dipodomys & Perognathus
