Bryliski 1978 Journal 0.2 miles N, 0.2 mi E Mission la Soledad montery co California 14 January 8:15pm Today's rain prevented me from accomplishing almost any work. It poured nearly all day. Around 9am I investigated a second locality - while digging around in the rain, mistook a horse manure pile - saturated - for a gopher mound. This signaled the time to move on. Drove south to King City and NW to San Benito, the third point in this first transect (Hastings Reservation first, Soledad second). San Benito was, for the most part, flooded. I had hopes of diminishing rains to the east of here but such was not the case. Returned to Soledad and began reconnaissance for 2nd sample for this locality. Several hundred feet from 1st locality sample site asked several farmers for permission to trap their pasture. They directed me to newly plant barley field ~1/2 mile N, 1/4 east of 1st site where gopher sign is quite numerous. Set 15 traps at 3:00pm, caught # 1/4 at 4:30pm. Tomorrow will continue sampling here for 2nd 15-20 animal sample.
