D. Brylski 1977 Journal 0.2 miles south Mission la Soledad, Monterey Co. California 4 December the gophers 4 or 5 times in this way. In short, my trapping effort remained high for a dwindling population. Those remaining seemed better at evading my traps. I do have much to learn in techniques of gopher trapping.. 13 January 8:45 pm Arrived last night in middle of light rain. This [illegible] gopher mounds were smoothed over by rain-drop action, allowing me (still) to determine fresh mounds. Those were the mounds without rain-drop sign considering that the rain stopped half thru the night. Fresh sign was not numerous on this 20 acre pasture. Over the 20 acres I estimate 30 mounds were fresh at 7 A.M. Unfortunately, caught only 3 individuals (#s 111,112,113). Factors contributing to poor success were: experienced gophers, occasional rainy weather. Roughly 20 trap days were accomplished yielding a 15% trap success. Tomorrow I intend to start trapping the second locality - perhaps I'll return here Monday the 16th to complete the 15 for this locality.
