Brubaker 1977 Journal 0.2 miles south Mission la Soledad, Monterey Co., California 3 December 12 pm. Presently have ~20 traps in place - still without [illegible] much success. Caught one ♀ (#100 in catalogue) last evening, but despite evidence of recent activity, nothing has happened yet today. Mounds apparently several days old are common, 4 or 5 fresh since last night were also found. 5 pm. Things picked up considerably this afternoon - total gophers caught now up to 9. #s 101 through 108 came, for the most part, between 2 and 3 pm. I'm on my way now to pull up all traps for the night. 4 December. 11 am. Nights here are quite cold - w/o a thermometer, I'd say last night's low was ~40°F. Mornings are foggy w/ low visibility until 9:30 or 10:30 am. Accidentally left 2 traps in ground last night - both had gophers in them (#s 109,110). #110 was still alive, #109 was recently dead. Both yielded ample blood samples. 109 & 110 were caught ~7 am. 20 traps or more are out, yet nothing since then. Those traps in the same hole since 2 December were moved, 4 or 5 holes had to be re-cleared of fresh material. Apparently the gophers are
