May 31 Russian Gulch State Park, off Mendocino Co., Calif.
2:10 PM One bird swimming in small bay entrance to Russian Gulchs. Grotesque orange bill and feet very apparent thru glasses. Dived under for about ½ min. Preening with bill and flopping wings at intervals as paddles outward against the gently incoming ripples of ocean. Seems to have a white line down back of head, may be reflection due to bright, warm sunlight.
