June 1 Russian Gulch State Park, Mendocino Co., Calif
After lunch Jo, Fran, and I set out eastward along the gulch road, intending to circle around by the falls and pine barrens, collecting ferns and cones. Fran wandered up the wrong trail while Jo and I were digging Gold-leaf Fern near the circle.
By the time I overtook her, both were in a bad mood and she decided to hike a shorter route. I galloped back to the circle, missed Jo who meanwhile had wandered around a bend, and tore on up toward the falls thinking she had gone on ahead. Dug up few young Five-fingered & Lady Ferns in the redwood forest.
Came upon Viola and Geo. Bartholomew in pine barrens at 4:10 PM. Collected sprigs of Cupressus pygmaea, Pinus muricata, and Pinus contorta var. bolanderi. Had cod and abalone for dinner tonight, courtesy of Mr. & Mrs. Ranger. Bart was rightly amazed at our appetites.
Also informed us a bird call we were uncertain about was the Pu'Wec.
Tonight we built a bonfire on the beach, toasted marshmallows, and talked until 11 PM. Fran and I went through our repertoire of tumbling tricks, Vi did backbends, and Bart stood on his hands. My, aren't we versatile?!
June 2 Another warm, sunny day. Up about 5:30 and had Camp 27 (rain washed dust off cupboard other day revealing this #) packed away in museum truck.
