May 30 Russian Gulch State Park, Mendocino Co., Calif.
afternoon, Mrs. Grinnell, Viola, and Josephine
hiked up North Hill to Mrs. G. and Fran's traps,
returning triumphantly with a young weasel
and a strange Microtus-looking mouse among
other things. Fran and I walked out to the
ocean and set gopher traps in the meadow
near the cliff edges. There are several new
camps in the park, but most of the
occupants fled to the pavilion during the
deluge. A large fire was blazing in the open
hearth of this large log cabin and it looked
very inviting. Our artist neighbor in the
camp just east of us was a very sad and
gerny spectacle today, having had most of his
belongings wetted last night and also victim
of a bad headcold.
May 31 Set out about 6:30 AM to collect traps. Gopher
traps had been set as follows: 1 in meadows
of short grass opposite Ranger Cabin - in
surface run, yielding one large ♂ gopher;
1 in deep run under log along edge of cliff by
ocean - no catch; 3 localities about 40 ft.
apart in meadow above ocean about 50 ft. in
from cliff edge. Of these last 3 localities:
① Surface run, traps set both ways → 1 adult ♂
② Deep run down, single trap → 1 small ♀
③ Deep run horizontal; 2 traps → nothing
