May 27 Russian Gulch State Park, 40ft., Mendocino Co., Calif. very closely resembling a sea lion swimming and diving with its dark brown head [illegible] sometime several seconds above water before it dived under again. I cought sight of it three times during about 5 min. of watching. Fran had a buck rabbit in one of her weasel traps in bruer patch short distance west of the highway; a 7 in unspecimelike condition. 6 PM Fran brought in young Gopher caught in trap in meadows opposite ranger cabin. May 28 Heavy dew last night. We had a Sorex vagrans visiting the tent again last night, running over tarpaulins and sleeping bags unbeknownst to three of us, but to the positive horror of Josephine who descended to the lower portions of her sleeping bag. We took advantage of a minus .6 tide at 7 AM with more invertebrate collecting at the ocean. This time Frances and I chose a short stretch of protected coast in a small cove. Most striking was the abundance of purple sea urchins nestled in pits so as to present a smooth surface to the beat of the waves. They are commonly described occurring thus, but are not so at Dillon Beach. Tide was low enough to uncover the eel grass and sea lettuce. Fauna quite abundant, but not much variety. Zones are very definitely marked, but very short as rochra drop off very steeply. We collected up our traps on way back about 9 o'clock. Got 10 animals today:
