May 22 Russian Gulch State Park, 40 ft., Mendocino Co., Calif.
Another very warm, cloudless day. Viola and I
picked up last night's trap-line before breakfast.
Set in typical meadowy - brushy spots along
road, beginning trapline about 1/8 mile north
of camp and throwing down traps about every 20ft.
Majority of traps in NETTLE. Museum Specials baited
with usual rancid and unpalatable walnuts. Of
the 37 traps sprung set, 10 animals were caught
and 2 other traps were sprung. Catch: 5 Peromyscus
maniculatus (3 ♂♀), 1 ♀ Sorex pacificus, 3 ♂
neotriculus gibbii , and 1 ♂ Zapus orarius.
Viola and I walked up to the entrance of the camp
with Fran to set weasel traps where she thought
she saw one this morning. Set 3 traps in
tangles of blackberry along small creek bordered
by young pines; meadow with short grass on
other side. Saw trails suspected Brush Rabbit.
Traps weasel-scented and also baited with
sardine. I set the traps for Fran to place in the
runs and ate the rest of the sardine ; Viola relaxed
on the meadow.
Species observed:
Melanerpes formicivorus
Psaltriparus minimus
Nuttallornis borealis
Selasphorus aleni
Wilsonia pusilla
