May 19 Russian Ruleh State Park, 40 ft., Mendocino Co., Calif.
5:30 PM Saw a black bird with large white wing patches and
a white rump flying in conifers on hill south of camp.
That could see a red head, but could not be certain..
5:40 PM Saw mole diggings in meadow just east of ranger
cabin. Caught a garter snake for purposes of
preservation. This specimen contains much red in
its color pattern. Walked a ways along creek looking
for amphibians, but only got into some nettle.
Crossed bridge down by ranger cabin and came
up heavily overgrown path on south side of creek.
6:00 PM Got a good look at two chickadees - came within
a few feet of me, hanging on underside of
leaves of willow and chinquapin and emitting
single wheezy notes. Saw a song sparrow in a
willow in middle of meadow. For several minutes,
it called in single monotonous notes. The brown
spot on breast stood out very markedly. I got into
some more nettle, fell in the creek, and was
late to supper.
May 20 Last night Fran and I set 32 traps along edge of large
meadow on other side of creek and about 1/8 mile west of
camp. Museum specials baited with usual rancid walnuts.
Caught 6 animals and had 7 other traps sprung, along
bank of creek densely grown with the usual thimble
berry, salmon berry, nettle, Equisetum, red alder, etc.
Caught 2 Peromyscus maniculatus and 1 Sorex pacificus.
In grass and rushes of the meadow, 1 Microtus and
