Boulevard, ST 1941 5 May 19 Russian Ruleh State Park, 40 ft., Mendocino Co., Calif. 5:30 PM Saw a black bird with large white wing patches and a white rump flying in conifers on hill south of camp. That could see a red head, but could not be certain.. 5:40 PM Saw mole diggings in meadow just east of ranger cabin. Caught a garter snake for purposes of preservation. This specimen contains much red in its color pattern. Walked a ways along creek looking for amphibians, but only got into some nettle. Crossed bridge down by ranger cabin and came up heavily overgrown path on south side of creek. 6:00 PM Got a good look at two chickadees - came within a few feet of me, hanging on underside of leaves of willow and chinquapin and emitting single wheezy notes. Saw a song sparrow in a willow in middle of meadow. For several minutes, it called in single monotonous notes. The brown spot on breast stood out very markedly. I got into some more nettle, fell in the creek, and was late to supper. May 20 Last night Fran and I set 32 traps along edge of large meadow on other side of creek and about 1/8 mile west of camp. Museum specials baited with usual rancid walnuts. Caught 6 animals and had 7 other traps sprung, along bank of creek densely grown with the usual thimble berry, salmon berry, nettle, Equisetum, red alder, etc. Caught 2 Peromyscus maniculatus and 1 Sorex pacificus. In grass and rushes of the meadow, 1 Microtus and
