May 18 Russian Gulch, Mendocino Co., Calif.
Many wren-tits heard along trail. One seen
flying low thru brush with low clit-clit notes.
Also saw gull and a vulture. Heard rufous-backed
thrushes. Morning was cloudless, sunny, and
warmed up about 8 o'clock. Night before very cold,
four pairs of icy distal appendages lined the tent
front. Jo just suggested we all climb-in one bag tonight.
She and I stayed in camp this afternoon finishing
up last night's catch. Ranger Engelhardt brought
in a good-sized gopher snake which Jo prepared.
Our two Stellar Jays came down into camp again
lighting on tables and benches. We hear pileated
warblers in the tall conifers south of camp and
frequently a song sparrow along the creek by camp.
May 19 Last night was warmer, but with very heavy dew.
Temperature this morning at 6 o'clock was 42° F.
Picked up traps set last evening, finding a catch
of 6 animals: 1 Microtus, 1 Peromyscus maniculatus,
1 Neotrichulus gibbii, and 2 Sorex vagrans. Traps
were set in thick, wet brush along creek on
edge of meadowy spots which cup in along the
road at intervals where the creek winds away
from the road. I set line of 15 traps (Museum
Specials) baited with walnuts just east of camp.
Thick vegetation along creek consists of Red
Alder, thimble berry, salmon berry, Cascara
sagrada, Equisetum, occasional elderberry,
