May 16 Party of five, led by Mrs. Hilda W. Grinnell, including
Josephine Crowley, Viola Memmler, Frances Bracke,
and myself. Invaluable assistance of Dr. David
Johnson first two days of trip. Left Berkeley at
7:10 AM, Mr. Johnson transporting most of supplies
and equipment in the old museum Rio; rest of
party traveling in Mrs. Grinnell's automobile.
Drove via San Rafael ferry north along Highway

marking its location. Ate lunch near the cars
about a mile east of the coast. Here we saw a
pair of red-tailed hawks circling about and a
few vultures again. Vultures seen in two's and
three's along Navarro River. Proceeded to Van
Damme Beach which appeared to have a CCC camp.
After a brief survey traveled on north to Russian
Ruler State Park, arriving about 3 PM. Received
permission from Ranger Engelhardt to camp and
to trap rodents, amphibians, and reptiles and to
collect flowers. Camped about quarter of mile east
of the ranger cabin where stove and table facilities
were available. Dave, Viola, Fran, & Josephine set
out 31 traps near dusk. I wiped dishes.
May 17 Started raining during night and was still drizzling
this morning. Picked up traps about 5:30 AM
where set along edge of small meadowy spots in
