Peromyscus californicus
Apr.5 Mud Creek, 800 ft., 3 1/2 mi. SW San Juan, Monterey Co., Calif.
thick undergrowth of prion oak, bracken, Artemesia,
Baccharis, blackberry, elderberry, snowberry, coffeeberry,
and bush monkey flower. This is mostly head height and
in some places at least 10 feet high. Soil is soft, black humus,
only slightly sandy. Traps along the fence contained 10
specimens; traps inside the fence, 8, and only this kind;
traps higher up the slope, 3. These specimens were not
prepared, thru lack of time, but were sexed and embryos
were saved. Of twenty-one specimens, ten were males and
eleven females. Eight of the females were with embryos,
two without embryos, one without embryos but nursing.
Average number of embryos of those eight possessing them: 2.6 (2-4),
Average size of embryos: 19.9 mm. (4 - 27 mm.)
Apr.7 Muddy Creek, 1400 ft., 5 Chular Canyon, Monterey Co., Calif.
Two were taken from a line of 62 traps set on south-facing
slope of hill in a closed stand of Salvia mellifera (dominant),
Artemisia californica, Baccharis sp, Lotus sp, bracken,
Celery, and gold-back fern on a carpet of short grass.
One specimen is male and the other female.
Apr.8 Muddy Creek, 1000 ft.
One male was taken in a line of 127 traps baited with a
mixture of peanut butter and rolled oats. Traps were set along
the wood road on the flat in an open stand of Artemesia
californica with scattered Baccharis sp. and Salvia mellifera,
