Asio Flammeus
July 30 Point Barrow, Alaska
more remote and less frequently visited or newly
found nests.
Aug. 8 Nest found between end of beach ridge and
snowy owl nest #2, not previously known.
It was in typical situation on grassy polygon.
This makes 3 nests between ridge and slough.
Nest with 6 owlets, the smallest 20' from
nest, others singly with 2 together up to
200' from nest. One flew about 15' but
was caught. A 7th bird well feathered
had been partly eaten by some unknown
agent. Finding this nest with large brood
successfully quitting it is further evidence
that human interference is a factor in
nest success. On Plot L.W. nest still
operating with 5 young, largest not ready
to leave.
Aug 9 No short-eared owl nests, in polygon
country between Village and Vath's Station.
