Jornich 1953 Polysticta stelleri June 8 Point Barrow, Alaska Today I saw 3 pairs between the navy base and Shrowie Lake, each foraging about in a small shallow pond. The birds were rather unwary. One pair remained in their pond as I came up only 150' away, then they walked off to the next pond some 20 yards farther. Finally they flew when I came up near them again. Others were similarly uncon- cerned when approached in the vessel. June 10 Two pairs on central marsh. June 13 One pair in drum area. June 16 Pairs scattered out on ponds on route to Barrow #3 with about the same frequency of occurrence as near the base. June 21 A ♀ on a pond near L.E. 3 or 4 times rose out of the water about 2' in its attacks on a power- line jaeager that was worrying it. about June 23 At plot L.E. I saw these ducks in the same combination as reported 2 days ago - a ♀ and 3 males at the north end, and a ♀ and 3 male at the south end. The one next discovered a pintail nest near the S.E. corner and now has 7 eggs. The ♀ was not on the nest but the eggs were covered and warm. On the 21st I found 6 eggs and the nest covered. A few minutes before when I was reconnoitering about 100 yards away the ♀ was seen to sneak off on foot among the polygons.
