March 19. It is surprising how cold it remains at this date. Again there was ice on the shallow ponds. The thermometer said 26°F at 7 am and only 50° at noon.
There is considerable difference in the leaf development of cottonwoods; on some these leaves are ½ to 1 developed, others are still in the catkins stage. The willows show the same difference in development but are less advanced than the cottonwoods. The mesquite & cactaceae are still completely dormant for outward appearance.
Made a trip to the nearby ponds and also to the big lake,
of the pools near camp saw 10 green-winged teal, 6 Black ducks and 4 blue-wing or cinnamon teal. The latter all ♂,
Brewer Sparrows & Wilson Snipe still present in usual numbers
Roadrunner observed one at close range; it streaked breast indicates Californicus
