Journal Summary of observations (written March 10) Feb. 27 through March 10, 1963 Ojo Laguna, Chihuahua, 5000 ft. el. Mexico Windy and cool to cold most of this period. On two nights the temp. went below 18oF judging from the fact that it was still 18oF when I looked at the thermometer in the morning. There is still not much evidence of spring. Catkins are on cottonwoods and willows but no leaves. Mosquitoes and catclaws still show no signs of life. A few blades of green are showing on Gramma grass or sacaton. Breeding activity. The only birds showing signs of mating are English Sparrows and a few of the Mourning Doves. One dove shot (not preserved) had testes enlarged. A few males have been cooing singly in trees and I have seen a few nuptial flights but most of the are still in flocks. Enlarged gonads were not found in any of the birds prepared. It appears that most of the birds here during this period are resident or winter resident.
