Journal Borell Ojo Sagina, 5200 ft., El. Chihuahua 1964 Mexico (East Bas Sierra del Vado). April 21, 1964 Cresencio Reached the Gutierrez ranch at 6:30 P.M. yesterday. Established camp (house trailer) at the same spot occupied in 1963 (Feb 25 - Apr 25), under the cottonwoods (+) in the yard of Sr. Gutierrez. Today made a trip on foot to some of the better collecting sites north of camp. The area is considerably dryer than at this time last year. Several of the shallow water areas where I collected waterfowl and shortbirds last year are now dry. Someone (within the last week) burned most of the grass area for 1/2 mile north of camp. This burning removed the bullrush and tall grass that formerly surrounded the largest pool. This burning and the dryness greatly deprievated one of the best collecting sites. The big laguna to the east is completely dry. Sr. Gutierrez said they have had a cold, dry, windy, spring. His cattle are extremely poor.
