Langara: thru 50's Langara lodge: Hensling Bay Brooks (1926) ~ 35 pairs nest on 25 miles of coastline of Langara (1937) Brooks wrote Hickoy, 40 pairs on island 4x8 miles, over 20 climbed by naturalist in 1936'. Wayne's account of Beele's data: 1952: 0/13 1957: 2/12 Unchecked eyes: 1958 5/13 -> so 1958 something happened! 1962: Beele & Jim Anderson & Don Hunter: discovered 5st monthly sites, pressure off. 1957-58 - something happened to Langara I. Fulmaro, 1958-59: Gull + Cormorant colonies dropped by 1/2 @ Lightstation. Wayne (1990): Rat cause of declines? from {500,000 (1950's) 80,000-90,000 (1970's)} to 22,500 (1981) - If rats can do this decline, why not finish them off by now. Fury Bay colony: murrelths by and large disappeared in 60's. - Permanent change in ocean flow. 1958/59 caused declines 1957-1958 Japanese current shifted; N. Pacific T° warmed to 1970's. 1970's: W. Canadian Ocean Temps warmed. Food availability for seabirds lost Salmon Stocks: down thru 70's. Oceanic Δ's may have caused initial drop in Murrelth pops, rats effect significant, but unknown; Murrelth colony stable thru 80's.
