Location: Mt. Diablo, Contra Costa, Co., Calif.
Weather: High clouds, front moving in.
November 5, 1988
Maren, me, John Gaim and 2 other ladies
went hiking up to Eagle Peak, NW of the
main peak of Mt. Diablo. We left at the
park staging area at end of Mitchell Canyon
Road. Underway from 12:30 - 17:30. Steep
climb! Saw Phoebe, Nuttall's Woodpecker
in lower oak fields. Western Bluebird too.
On way up a narrow canyon through chaparral saw & heard: Wrentits,
Benicks' Wrens, Scrub Jays, Hermit Thrush,
Hutton's Vireo (called this one in close with
"jiriches"). Also: Marsh Hawk, Sharp-shinned
Hawk, Cooper's Hawk, 1 pair of Golden eagles
circling about Eagle Peak.
From Eagle Peak, towards dusk, I heard
White-throated Swifts, but didn't see them.
