Bird Notes Doug Bell July 24, 1988 Eagle soared out over the ocean while an adult soared over the forest. Intermittent rain showers - but also sun. We hiked halfway up Town Hill - incredible greens, lush forest - a true rain forest. So much dark water in mini-loops everywhere. Kingfisher along the river. We drove back to town. At 19:00-20:30 went to the Bird Sanctuary at the lagoon next to Massett. Saw about 40 Canada Geese, a couple Lincoln's Sparrows, some Least Sandpipers. Also an eagle nest / one fledgling; the nest is over a black top road leading to the bird watch tower. The parent is totally white-washed. Then drove to the dump south of town (5 miles). Only loads df Ravens + 1 3yr Bald Eagle. Had dinner at David's house, stayed overnight there. Met 2 couples of Dept. workers who had come out to dinner at David's. July 25, 1988 Left David Phillipps B&B (Copper Beach House). Tried calling some people, stopped in at Fisheries Office (Lybbe Endrude) No luck on getting a boat ride. Met Alex Jones (Haida Indian) at the cafe. He told us that they used to take gull eggs out of Massett Inlet. We then met John Cooper and wife Dianna. They're studying the least sandpiper population at the sanctuary. There were no sandpipers there before '64, when it was a salt marsh.
