became much narrower than the others. Weather
soaked in and it rained intermittently. We saw
lots of Bald Eagles the whole way - mostly adults
visible on tops of first tree row up from the water.
In Greenvile Strait we timed stretches between
eagles - one bird every 3-4 minutes at our Ferry's
speed ([illegible] knots). Surprisingly little bird or
animal life visible, and no Stellers-
norized Gulls for the entire trip until we got to
the sound before Prince Rupert. There was a small
colony of CWC's nesting on an islet in the channel
to the south of the large coal-plant, probably
5 miles S. of Prince Rupert. Barely any CWC's
at Prince Rupert itself - just a few birds. But
lots of Calif. Gulls again!. Scattered Common Murre,
Rhinie Anadlets. We arrived Prince Rupert at 22:15 (had departed Port Hardy 07:30). Took Benedict,
im Deutschen, with into town for lodging at Pincer
Inn, but no space available. In fact, the whole
town was booked up. Had to pitch a tent in the
rain at the compound near the ferry. ($9.00). The
ferry ride was beautiful, especially the second half.
still great stretches of forested islands - looks like
old growth. Some logging. Waterfalls which come
straight off mountainsides.
