cutting of forests is drastic. Tofino is beautiful,
meat towns harbor. I called Rod Palm
(726-4254), the boat captain for Alan's group. He
was reluctant to take me along for collecting, but
I convinced him otherwise. We met at the
Crab Dock at 17:00, really about 17:30. Alan's
grad student, Dan Gries, and 2 people from
BC Parks (James Kattie) showed up. They were
going out to trap Rhino Auklets and check them
for diving gauges. Rod Palm brought 2 small
kids along (his 8 and 9 from SF). Went out in
a Boston Whaler w/2 70 hp Mariners. Fast.
Clayoquot Sound reminded me of the San Juans,
Clear, sunny, very calm. Took ca 35 minutes
to get to Cleland Island (Base 12). Lots of
feeding Common Murre's, Auklets, Marbled
Murrelets, etc. Cleland was about the only
rock out there w/loads of nesting gulls on it.
Also many loofers including Calif. Gulls. Saw
a Harlequin Duck real close. After dropping
the 3 off, we went out a ways to the east,
and I shot 5 gulls (DAB 399-403). It was
very calm out on the ocean. Cleland Id. is a fair
distance out from land. Back at the dock by 19:00.
Had a beer of Marcus Dane (chart Sailboat fella).
He and Marc (Sailboat/whale nut who is also
the dentist at Tofino) helped set up lights so I
