Field Notes Doug Bell July 14, 1988 off today. There were about 200 nesting gulls in the air. Also oystercatchers and some laughing cormorants (Double-crested). Gulls 394-398 collected today. Saw another Common Murres + 2 Bald Eagles on return trip. Back at Bamfield spent rest of day doing the gulls. Saw at least two 3 Bald Eagles several times today. Many NW Grouse, occasional ravens. Afternoon was downright sunny. July 15, 1988 at breakfast we could see 3 Bald Eagles at the entrance to Bamfield foraging on the mud banks at low tide. One bird appeared to be hopping around on the bank, while another joined it and a third watched from a tree. One ad. and one imm. were on the ground. Another adult in the tree. After breakfast, and many phone calls, all plans for hooking up with people to collect fell through, except for a chance to go out with a boat taking Alton Burger's grad. student to Deland Island out of Tofino. We decided to drive from Bamfield to Tofino on Clay Clayoquot Sound. The drive takes ca. 4 hrs. We left at 11:30, arrived at 16:30. Stopped for lunch in Port Alberni. Dirt logging road from Bamfield to Alberni. Saw a & ruffed grouse & chick crossing the road about 1/2 hour out of Bamfield. Took Highway 4 from Pt. Alberni to Tofino - beautiful country, but old the clear-
