July 11, 1988
Met Ted Miller at Royal Provincial Museum.
Very nice, enthusiastic. He invited us to stay overnight,
and take us on a hike after scale today. We
pretty much spent the day in Victoria, at the museum.
I checked out the gall collection. Ted Miller gave
me a couple more contact people:
Alan Burger - Bamfield Marine Station 8-728-3301
Kees Vermeer - CWS 9-356-6537
Marilyn Lambert - Swifftsure Tours 477-5922
This evening Ted took us & Frances (a friend) up
to Finlayson Mountain, NW of Victoria. We
hiked up 340 m to the top of this rock. Great
forest around it: hemlock, cedar, fir, etc. Large oaks too.
Top was rather dry. Robins, finches, and a
? Ruffed Grouse & brood of 2 old chicks. We
got very close to her, quite tame. I also asked
Ted what accipiter nest around and he said Cooper's
Hawks are most common. Last year a pair even
nested on the museum grounds.

We invited Ted Miller out to breakfast, since he was
so kind to put us up for the night and take us out
to a Steak Restaurant for dinner (Domestic Wine -
$13.00 per bottle x 2 bottles!). We then went downtown,
drove to the museum, bought stamps, tried to find
a detailed map of Queen Charlottes, etc. Left Victoria
about 11:30, headed to Bamfield (Barkley Sound)
