Field Notes
Doug Bell
July 9, 1988
Spent rest of day preparing & stuffing specimens. Around
19:00 we rowed into town, had dinner, rowed over to
Brown Island, then back. At Brown Island we
heard Bald Eagles, then saw two sitting atop a snag
right next to one another. One bird was giving the
begging cry. We sat on Marine lab pier till 23:00.
July 10, 1988
Finished doing gull wings, packed up, said goodbye
and were on the Ferry to Sidney B.C. at 16:30.
The Ferry went right past South Mandarte Island,
which is east of Sidney I. and Sidney Spit. Mandarte
had extensive vegetation, loads of gulls. 2 corms, but
a Pelican visible. Mandarte is shaped like a S-N
doof of bread. Small trees on eastern side. West side
is dened / cliffs. (Forgot to mention - 4 Bald Eagles
searing over Friday Harbor as we left. Also saw
an adult over central part of island as we drove to
Roche Harbor). After passing through customs,
where everybody had to put in their 2 cents for
my declared purpose a gun, we headed for Victoria.
Beautiful, clean city. European, English influence is
quite strong. Some places remind one of Holland.
Buildings everywhere in the city, and cruising along the
waterfront both in the harbor and on the Strait,
We spent the night in a Bed & Breakfast down
($55.00 - Canadian).
