Field Notes Doug Bell July 8, 1988 Approximately 15 Orca's paraded past and went quite far north. Just as we thought they would leave disappear out of sight a new group of two small ones, a medium sized one, and a few medium-sized stragglers out of the south appeared. About then, Big Daddy turned and headed south to this group. They met at the point, then all turned and proceeded south along the shore. We tried following them with the car. Could hear their blow sports breathing, but could hardly see them in the fading light. On way home saw a Great-horned Owl & a bat. July 9, 1988 08:00 Karen and I started in the Scoter for Colville Island. Moderate winds blowing already. The Strait south of Friday Harbor has swells. We only made it to the SW corner of Lopez I., when the waves got far too rough - both standing waves and swells. We turned around then, after approx 20 min. of boating, and decided to head north back up to Gull Rock. Smoother boating as it was better protected. Took us about 35 min to get rock up to the area for collecting. We circled Gull Rock [mean Flattop I.], waited until 4 boats got out of the vicinity, then collected 3 gulls / 3 shots 386-388. Saw one Tufted Puffin circle the boat at Gull Rock. We were out of the area right away. Had a little difficulty getting a specimen out of the kelp at NW corner of island, but we succeeded.
