Field Notes Doug Bell July 8, 1988 One of the latter two gulls wounded on the island, so I shot it but could not retrieve the body. We returned via the eastern route around Lopez & Shaw Islands. Saw a couple Puffins, lots of groups of Rhino Auklet. Two ad. Bald Eagles perched on snags. Couple Harbor Seals, one mother with very small pup. Oh yes, Colville Island had Pelagic Cormorants nesting, Double-crested Cormorants around (30), but I did not notice any nests. A few Pigeon Guillemots, and, of course, around 200 gulls. On the cliffs of adjacent Pt. Colville (Lopez I.) large colony (>150) Pigeon Guillemots (damn spelling!). We were back by 11:30 at Friday Harbor Lab. Required 2 5 gal. cans of gas. Waxed up gulls, finished tracking day @ 18:00. Had dinner in town. Drove out to Lime Kiln Point at 20:00. Stayed out until 22:00. After long wait spotted a few Dall's Porpoises (crick in tail). Then we were just about ready to head home (21:15) when several Orcas showed up. They were heading north around the point, first one, then several. One Big Daddy (with forward tilting dorsal fin). Quite a few medium sized animals, and some smaller pups. Very active. Many times we could see the longitudinal white patch on the cheeks as a whole came up for air. Just gorgeous.
