Field Notes Dory Bell July 7, 1988 middle of it. No trees, just rock & grass. Approx. 60 gulls on the island. We circled the island completely in the course of collecting. One Puffin flew close past us. Shot 4 gulls - all seem to be in good breeding shape (OAB 375-378). Some gulls seen incubating. Kayakers saw us, one tried to reach us. We left before he could. On trip back to Friday Harbor we saw a Minke Whale in San Juan Channel - one whale, medium tall dorsal fin set caudally, long, grayish, slow procession through water. Large beast - perhaps 2x as long as our skiff (15' skiff). We also saw 2 Bald Eagles - both adults, one sitting, one flying (over San Juan Island). Total trip from Fri Hbr. to Bull Rock & return: 9:45-11:30. Quick. Towards evening 21:00-21:40 we drove back out to Lyme Point to watch for whales. Lots of Dall's Porpoise & Harbour Porpoise in strait between San Juan Island & Vancouver Island. Really calm evening, no wind, coppery sunset. July 8, 1988 Maren & I were up and out on the Soter (a glorified Boster Whaler w/ mph motor) by 08:30. Headed South to Colville Island. Took only 45 min to get there. Glass calm, sunny, hot day. Over the course of 40 min. I collected 7 gulls - hard shooting. They were very skittish. Fired 12 shells total, missed one completely, hit one gull 2x but it kept going, wounded another. Found
