Field Notes

was looming on the horizon. Nevertheless,
time for one more bird. Early enough, a GWC
(043'342). Shot, measured, weighed, tissued
and skeletonized this bird in just under an hour.
Record time. Packed the specimen and over
half my gear and carried it over to where the
boat is tied. The high winds are whipping up
the waves and giving it a higher tide than its
already high level (7'). Tomorrow's morning tide
is 4.8', so I am watching to make sure the
boat doesn't come to rest too high up. Sat
in the boat from 21:30-22:45 to make sure it
got out with the tide a ways. While sitting
a tremendous commotion arose from over the
west end of the island. All the water birds
lifted off while alarming. It was past dusk,
but a Bald Eagle was visible, flapping heavily
over the island, heading north east towards
Chinook. About 20 gulls and a tern in
pursuit. It really looked eerie through the
failing light.

Up at 06:00, broke down camp and loaded up the
boat just as the tide was floating the skiff. Had to pole
the boat off into a ways out past the pier
pillings to get into deeper water. The outboard started
just fine and my ride back to chinook went well.
