Field Notes Doug Bell June 21, 1988 Found an abandoned Canada Goose nest w/eggs under- neath the pines near camp. Geese are [illegible] less abundant here this year, they aren't nesting in the trees like they did last year. Brown-headed Cowbirds appear to be quite actively searching out nests of Song Sparrows. Starlings are nesting in the old pier pillings. June 22, 1988 10:00 - although the colony nest of the trees/camp area is quite disturbed by my presence - I'm trying to do a morphotype frequency count: 48:15:17 WG:H:6UG. Fluke of about 30 Calif. Gulls passed overhead. Around 20 Am. Widgeon and a few Mallards are feeding in the mud flats. Counted approx. 50 Double-crested cormorant nests in the high dunes of the west end of the island. Over 250 imm. Double-crested Cormorants are resting at that end of East Sand Island. Between 11:30 and 17:40 I shot 3 more gulls and prepared and measured all 7 birds (includes the 4 from yesterday). DAB 339-341. There was plenty of opportunity to shoot more birds, but I thought it best to get the ones done that I already had "in hand". Of all the Western Gulls [or types] that I've gotten, more seems to exhibit 100% Western traits. The same could be said of the Glamorous-winged Gulls. Perhaps this is true of nearly every bird here. At 17:41 I decided to shoot one more bird. The weather was threatening a bit, it rained this morning, cleared up, and a front
