Field Notes Doug Bell June 21, 1988 at least three songs. Very nice. Checked the boat at around 07:15. It was above the water line by about 2 yards - so I'll have to move it out with the tide. Web. eve. so the lower morning high tide will still flood it. 3 Canada Geese flew up out the marsh near the pier. Counted 25 Greater Scaups. 08:00 Assessing mating types: ♂ WC ♀ WC TTT III ♂ WC ♀ H ♂ WC ♀ 6WC ♂ 6WC ♀ WC ♂ H ♀ WC II ♂ 6WC ♀ H I ♂ H ♀ H III ♂ 6WC ♀ 6WC I↑I ♂ H ♀ 6WC II I set out trap rings on 3 nests in sandy beach/ driftwood log area, and 2 walk-ins in the grass area west of the trees. This proved to be quite ineffective. The rings did not work well, and the walk-ins were too far away, by the time I showed my face for its birds were out of the trap. So I hid in a cement box closer to the traps, and tried jumping out and rushing the traps. The cement box is some ruin left from the pier-fishing days. Barn Swallows nest in it. Well, this worked to catch only one bird ♀AB (335). Another bird escaped before I could get to it. The colony became quite disturbed. Spent most of the day trying to trap. Around 17:00 I resorted to shooting. Shot 3 gulls (336-338).
