Field Notes Doug Bell June 18, 1986 of good WG's. Nest w/ small chicks. Surf Scoter, Pigeon Guillemots in mate. Another nest w/ pair of WG's on flat piers to north; ? WG & WG but slightly lighter- +eyring, possibly pinkish hue dorsally, greenish irides. tips: incubating. Two more nests on pilings - all WG x WG. Another nest w/ chicks on pile south of OSU dock- & has WG features, but trailing edges of 10" tips are grey, aging yellowish-pinkish, iris dk. greenish. ? may be a WG sitting nearby. Another nest on southern navigatio tower. Total 7 gull nests for the waterfront by OSU Marine Lab, Yaquina Bay. 17:30 15:30 - at Yaquina Head. 1) For thin loaf-like rock just offshore from SE core of Yaquina Head 15 gull nests visible, all WG x WG except one which has hybrid & (light 10" tips, but still darker than mantle, dark irides, possibly flesh eyeing) and WG & that tends toward hybrid status - has faded trailing edges of 10's, especially 7,6,5. Otherwise normal WG. The hybrid nest is on top of the rock at level area - gassy. Hybrid pair copulated, have week old chicks. About 4/2 nests have chicks. 2) on SE slope closest to above rock - 4 gull nests; all WG x WG One pair of which has light irides. A Hyb. & landed in between 2 gull nests - her 10's are lighter than WG due to fading & wear + less pigment. Other than that, she has light yellow eyeing + light greenish irides.
