Field Notes Davy Bell June 17, 1988 Arrived in Newport 15:10. Made arrangements with Pam Rogers for a key to Lab at OSU Hatfield Marine Science Center. Ms. Rogers is secretary to the director. Went to the dump, but found out I could no longer shoot there due to liabilities. Bummer! Called Roy Lowe (USFWS), but he's too busy to take me out. They're doing a sealbird survey of the Oregon coast. They sound really concerned about disturbance at commonant/ murres colonies, claim that the presence of their boat causes birds to stand up off nests, whereupon Ravens rob their eggs. Sounds extreme. Checked in at the Youth Hostel. Had dinner at local Italian place - met Pete Lawson & wife & son - a statistician at OSU Lab. Did work on Peregrines in Texas, Mexico. Found 6 eagles in NE Mexico w/in 12 km, good reproduction. Oh yes, Roy Lowe said Oregon now has 9 pairs of Peregrines - only one on the coast up North. Last year they laid, but failed, this year they were at cliff but did not lay. Anyway, Pete Lawson set me in touch with Jerry Butler who'll check for loat nests tomorrow. June 18, 1988 Someone broke into my car last night while it was parked at the Newport Youth Hostel. Must have happened zw. 10:30 pm - 9:00 am. Only took my Marine Radio. 13:00 - at OSU Lab waterfront - checking gulls. On piling just off from the waste treatment dock, I nest 4 pairs
