Field Notes Dorey Bell

phoned when I got to Hopland. He said it's a bad year for peregrines. Of the 45 nests he is watching, about 20 have failed. Squaw Rock has no young - it failed. They even removed an addled egg from this sight. Scotia Bluffs failed this year, as well as Anchor Bay. How depressing. They thinks it's due to KELLITANE (2001's) use. Falcons near agricultural valleys are failing again. Vineyard use of KELLITANE is also high. The wildlife people are trying to get an injunction against its use. The situation might only get worse. Monty also said that life-spans at an eyrie are short - ca. 5 years for 88's.
I drove on to the Eel River at Holmes. Camped on the river bar.

Up at 0600. Walked over to the river cliffs, set up the scope. Saw the 2 come in from Holmes area flying high, steady. Made direct line for tree or cliff. He sat for a bit, then soared out in front of the cliff circling. The falcon showed up, landed in a snag. As both birds circled in front of the rock I heard begging from possibly 2 birds, eyas(es)? In the course of the nest how 2 adults were at various times present, then absent. Occasional screaming from young too - At one time the tiercel dove out from his perch in a snag at the top of the rock in a long swooping steep. He disappeared in the direction of Holmes flat, but soon reappeared 'Got food'. Returned to his perch.
