Met Tony Huntley (ornith Prof - UCS) and his "crew"
of young ladies at the Ano Nuevo State Park / Reserve
Kiosk. Had left Berkeley at 06:40, arrived at Ano Nuevo
08:30 - light traffic on the bay bridge today. Phil
Thorson was the boat driver - and Gary Strachan,
Park Ranger. Gary is a former HSU person (grad '77), and
a birder, as Tony referred to him. Took about 1/2 to
get to the island in an 14' Avon w/ 15 HP motor. On
Ano Nuevo by around 10:30. Tony showed me the
area around the old light tenders houses, on S and
of island, for trapping. Set out 4 rings & 1 walk-in.
So far (16:00) have managed to catch 6 gulls -
including 2 mated pairs; all off 3 egg nests. Fae
(DAB 317-322). It looks like all are L.O. occidentalis,
on this island. Tony estimates ca. 350 pairs Western Gulls.
Looks of Calif. Sea Lion - smells like the men's restroom
at a bus depot! Gulls are thick - nests everywhere.
Looks like about 1/2 the nests still have eggs, many
just hatching; most chicks < 1 week old. Pigeon Guillemots,
yelastechers, Cassins Auklets & Rhinos. Auklet nest
here. Also House Finches, Starlings & Barn Swallows. About
30-40 Brown Pelicans lulling about. Elephant Seals litter
the eastern beaches
