Field Notes Doug Bell May 26, 1988 We were up by 07:00. Viewed Sugarloaf rock from our camp - could see Tufted Puffins, Cormorant and Pigeon Guillemots circling around. Counted about 10 puffins. No sign of Peregrines. I finished preparing the gulls by noon. We drove back to the ranch house, said goodby to Jenny. We went south about 1 1/2 miles to the large "flatiron" rock sitting Steamboat Rock. 1/4 mile offshore, lots of murres (+300), Brandt's Cormorants (+60) and a few gulls (13) nesting. Some Brown Pelicans. Four Black Brant were foraging in the surf - beautiful goose! We then drove out to the old (1868) Cape Mendocino Lighthouse - which placed us about 50' higher than Sugarloaf and gave us a good view of the rock which was about 1/4 mile way. We watched it through the scope closely for 1 1/2 hours. Lots of Pigeon Guillemotts, Cormorants (Pelagic, Brandt's, Double Crested) - the Pelagics were scattered about in individual nests, the Brandt's are on a small colony area on a NE slope, about 75 way down from rock crest. The Double-crested are nesting on the very top - probably 20 nests. Lots of Sea Lions on Steller scattered calf. Sea Lions! + Harbor Seals' beach below (>300). No sign of Peregrines. There is a good rock at the next point north - where Bear River flows out. The rock is
