Field Notes Doug Bell 24 May 1988 We camped at Van Damme State Park. Swainson Thrush, Robin, House Wrens, Chestnut-backed Chickadee, Baja Pygmy Nuthatch (family), Steller's jays, Red-tail (begging worm), Junco. After breakfast we headed out to the Spring property inbetween both units of Van Damme State Park. Drove out to the bluffs. Collected 6 gulls - DAB 299-304. 299 was the male of a pair nesting on a small rock just offshore. I unfortunately lost the ? in the sea - although I tried wading out to the rocks where she beach'd. It got simply too deep + cold. Weather is warmer today, less wind. Few clouds. Saw close a couple Ospreys, several Ring-bills passing through. Black-shouldered Kite, Harriers and several Kestrels hunting over the Spring's pastures. Starlings, Red-wings, possible Horned Lark. Counted 61 gulls on offshore rock at Van Damme State Park = Van Damme Cove. 25 May 1988 After breakfast in Mendocino we drove back to Van Damme St. Park, parked our things. Heard an immature Red-Tail begging for food. Northern Flickers nesting nearby. A robin was alarmed about something which turned out to be a Canada Jay! After packing we drove back out to the Spring ranch. A pair of ospreys were hunting the bluffs again, as were harriers, turkey vulture. Several Savannah Sparrows in pasture vegetation.
