Maren and I left Berkeley at 13:30, drove 101 north to 128, then the latter route over to Highway 1. In spite of several stops and lot of roadwork, we arrived in Mendocino by 16:30. We first stopped in at Clara Spring's ranchhouse to say bright hello.
They are cleaning up a couple rooms in the house, unpacking a lot of Mrs. painted pottery. The front room is just gorgeous - thick wood-beam ceiling, fireplace, etc. Their lettuce operation is doing well - last year they 15,000 heads. Alan has been doing a lot of the planting. Visited with Clara until 18:00. She showed us lots of pictures - including one of the fishing boat rescue (1981). Maren and I then went into the town. Ate at Dickie's Bar, Barn Swallows & Cayspes (2) visible from the window. Went down to the mouth of Big River, saw Green-herons, Kingfishers, Purple Martins (6) - fledged young, cliff swallows, Surf Scoter. On rock just south of the river mouth about 14 Pelagic Cormorants were nesting. White-crowns around. For sunset we went out to the Headlands - Savannah Sparrow bathed in a pool next to us as we sat behind a rock for windbreak. Weather feels like winter - high winds - very rough seas.
Goat Island. On rock off the headlands counted about 7 Pelagic Cormorant nests and ca. 60 Brandt's Cormorants (including 1/2-grown young). About 8 WC nests.
