Field Notes Don Bell May 19, 1988 Individual or pairs of Xantus Murrelets, a flying fish!, large pod of Risso's Dolphins + young ones - probably +/- 25 dolphins. Wind & waves not too bad. We arrived at Prince Island about 13:30. Landed on the south side with an aren raft - Dwight ferried Dave, me & Martha to shore. Prince Island is gorgeous - really desolate - lots of prickly pear cactus on south slopes. Colony of Brandt's Cormorants, some double-crested cormorants. We first hiked up to a battery of Cassin's auklet burrows - searched through them for chicks. Found 2 chicks, several eggs - always 1 egg per nest except one nest had 2 eggs. Nest birds - most of the nests checked (25) had been occupied, but the chicks had already fledged. We then hiked up to the top of Prince Island. Saw House Finches on way up. At top lots of gulls nesting - also on the north slopes. More auklet burrows too. I set my traps out and waiting along the south/west face. Nice view of Hoffman Pt. or San Miguel - where Peregrines may be nesting. As I was waiting for gulls to go onto or into the traps, I heard the imitated "kek-kek-kek" call of a Peregrine. An immature year old bird came flying over, its attention and screaming directed at me. It looked a bit bedraggled - in a heavy molt - but it had a mostly brown feathers - heavy streaking on breast.
