Field Notes Doug Bell
April 26, 1988
Left Berkeley at 11:00, arrived at Monterey 13:00. On Highway 1 south. On the small, grass covered, off-shore rock (actually, it is separated from mainland by a split) about 1 mi. S of Rocky Point, I wanted 71 gulls in territory. Rocky Pt. itself looks like it could harbor a peregrine eyrie. A couple gull territories on small rocks just off Rocky Creek. On rocks off Rocky Creek & Division Knoll: ca. 20 Brandt's Cormorants nests + >200 Common Murres. Scattered Gull Territories.
14:00 - at Division Knoll, just S Rocky Ck., 5 Peregrine, Adult, powered across Hwy 1 up slope to sit on wire next to pole, upon ridge. Gorgeous! Dark head - quite faded back proper. Cast. 14:10 - left obs. site, bird still sitting. Stopped along Highway 1 at various points. Arrived Big Creek Reserve at 15:30. Went out to beach & set up cross-wing with bread. Lots of gulls around - many immatures. They came in to my trap right away - caught 2 birds - an adult & (DAB 238). But after that, they did not come in for food. Tried trapping until quite late, then decided to shoot. Shot 4 more birds (DAB 236-239).
