Field Notes Doug Bell April 5, 1988 cont 8:52 - ? shifting on eggs (?). the hen began making bobbing motions with her head, as if reaching down to pick at something on the ground, while maintaining her body horizontal, sort of hunched. In the course of 2 min. she rolled about 14 times, rotating her body around twice through 360°. At one point, she appeared to lie on her side - "listing". Could also see her back feathers rise - from the heat. Only once did she sit "straight" up to look out. Seems like a lot of activity to me. Possibly even some "dry tumbling" going on - or if she were about to take a bath in cold water. 8:58 - ? her settled down or completely again. I think her back is towards me. The weather was cold, clear this morning Light lost on grass in shade. Heat waves now rising off ground in sun - the pothole must get quite warm! 9:03 - Nearly entire upper half of pothole in shade: [diagram] 9:06 - ? shifted again. 9:24 - ? sitting up, looking out of pothole, then shifting, picking, shifting, rotating, shuffling in scrape. Rotated at least one, now facing out of pothole. Lots of head motion to eggs. She might be panting from heat. 9:30 settled back on eggs. 9:57 - ? still in pothole, on scrape. It looks like she is now partially in shade, pothole is over 1/3 shaded on the back
