Field Notes Doug Bell April 4, 1988 On my way up to the Phelps Ranch in southern Humboldt County, Calif., to observe the Peregrines. Left Berkeley at 3:00 pm. Arrived at Squaw Rock at 5:00 pm. Watched for 10 min., no sign of falcons. Continued on. Arrived at Ron & Todd’s hawks at 7:45 pm. Good timing! Side Note: Morty Kinner observed Squaw Rock on April 5, 1988. Saw food exchanges & incubation in progress. PS - I saw the Raver’s incubating - just as I did last week when at Squaw Rock. Other birds observed at the Phelps Ranch, between April 5 - April 6, 1988 - Blue Grouse (heard) Meadowlarks Brewer’s Blackbirds (flocks) Aven Woodpeckers Turkeys - neat territorial scuffles. Golden-crowned Sparrows Golden Eagles (2 - soaring over Mattole R.) Pileated Woodpecker - Calling Ravens, Crows Annas Hummingbirds Western Blackbirds (nest building) Starlings Mountain Quail butternut did not see any Bar-tailed Pigeons.
