FIELD NOTES Doug BELL LOCATION: Alcatraz I., SF. Co., CALIF DATE: March 31, 1988 Weather: sunny, clear; wind E; TIME: High, decreasing mild. Time: 11:40 - 14:00 At blind on cistern observing Western Gulls. 11:56: 47 birds on platform. Most sitting, resting. Banded bird: white/silver near 30; and yellow/silver near territory 32/31; 12:14 - the yellow/silver ♂ is at the nest on territory 31 - he got up to chase a ♀ away. Two different faded pink/silver ♀s, one ♂ paired inbetween 36 & 32, the other hanging out near 35/5, but often getting chased away. Silver left by ♂ at 36. Another yellow/silver ♂ ziv. 33 & 36, yell./silver ♀ zo 32/30. 13:00: 41 gulls on cistern. Interesting - lot of Territorial activity, as before. Some head tossing. No courtship feeling seen yet, and no copulation yet today. On IB one gull has a bright red/silver band combination. Other birds seen - starlings, house finches - several; white-crowned song sparrows singing. Raven (1); Glaucous-winged Gull - ad. except for brownish bill tip. About 250 Western Gobes off west end of island. Some Double-crested Cormorants. I was with Dave Lewis & his 11 yr old son Eric & his friend Jacob.
