Field Notes

Humboldt Co., Calif. March 27, 1998 - cont.
sitting in snag (C), just as before. So I think
the birds have yet to begin their clutch. Both
"most-likely" potholes were empty, yet had
depressions. The female sure seemed lethargic,
as she sat around from 08:30 - 12:30 on snag (C)
with making only one short flight. The
male had copulated her twice, and they really
seemed to stick around at pothole (D). This
pothole is probably 3' x 3' x 4' deep. I think
this will be the one. I am hopeful!
11:15 - Location: Briceland Road, 2 mi. W. Redway.
We stopped for 5 min. at this rock. Nice view
of the pothole where the falcons bred last year.
Female visible in pothole, she is lying down,
peering out, settling, looking at ground when lifting
up a bit, then resettling like a hen eggs!
It sure looks like she is already incubating.
100 - 15:35 - We drove the Bell Springs Road
from Carnerville south to Cummings. Very nice
roads along the way - very good potential
peregrine sites. Saw fair number of Western
Bluebirds, Meadowlarks, Vultures. One adult
& Cooper Hawk.
Total trip mileage: Berkeley -> Humboldt Co. -> Berkeley 468 miles.
