FIELD NOTES Doug Bell
Humboldt County, Calif.
March 27, 1988- cont.
it out to try to reach pothole Z, where the S
had been seen sitting yesterday. After doing that
we scrambled back over the top of the rock
and made our way around to the front to check
on the length of the rope. As we proceeded through
the trees at the base of the rock, the falcons
would mail a bit, but they seemed somewhat
confused about where we were going. We managed
to make it all the way up it to just below
snag C), and got some great views of both
flying and sitting. The female flew up to the
snag & sat in it, looking around. She didn't see
us right away. But once we were clearly
visible both S & F began the heb-heb-kek
alariming. We were pt pretty close to pothole Z.
as we went back along the face under pothole
D), they again did some heb-hebing. They
continued mailing till we got around the
rock face. When we reappeared atop the rock
they began mailing again, flying out over
the expanse of the area in front of the rock.
Unbelievably beautiful! Heavy stops with the
wind+ against it, also
